Water bottle filling stations were created out of the demand for drinking water and the concern over the environmental impact of plastic water bottles consumption. Approximately 2.8 billion plastic water bottles have not been consumed as a result of the use of filling stations. Filling stations reduce plastic water bottle consumption, keep them out of the landfills and our streets, and they help save energy and money. Currently, installations are seen in educational institutions, parks, hospitals, airports, effectively contributing to the health of our environment. Kendra, a strong water conservation advocate, opposed vehemently the use of bottled water. She carried her Nalgene water bottle attached to her backpack almost everywhere she went: while traveling, at school, at camp, etc.
